An Unusual NHL Game Play

While watching last night’s NHL game between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders (on NHL Center Ice, there was a most unusual goal that occurred and stunned everyone watching.

O’Byrne, defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens, scored on his own net.  It caused the game to be tied during regulation time.  The game then went into overtime, and eventually into a shoot out.  The New York Islanders ended up winning the game.

It was something I had not seen before.  The crowd was quiet at first.  The announcers were stunned.  And, it was obvious how upset O’Byrne was with himself. This occurred as soon as he saw the puck going into the net.

I, personally, feel for O’Byrne.  Everyone makes mistakes and there are probably a number of reasons why this play occurred.

Irregardless, at the end of the game – the Montreal Canadien fans chanted relentlessly “O’Byrne!” It was ruthless.

This goal is something I will never forget.
