Hockey Night In Canada & Other NHL Concerns

I just got done watching the opening segment to my beloved Hockey Night In Canada (HNIC) on the NHL Network. I am disgusted. The opening song is “Saturday’s The Night For Fighting” written by Elton John. HNIC is not the same without the traditional HNIC theme. It just isn’t, I don’t care what any hockey newcomer says. It has both gone to the masses and astray. The current theme sounds like it belongs as the theme for those cage fighting shows. It’s atrocious.

In addition to numerous clips about hitting the boards and/or opponents, there are clips of cheerleaders (sometimes known as “Ice Girls”), and other hockey related sights. That’s another thing. What the blazes are cheerleaders doing in hockey? The sport does not need them, in my opinion. By having them, whoever started the notion is letting others believe that hockey does not have more to offer than shaking booties and pompoms. Do we really need that to bring people into the arenas? I don’t think so. I don’t like it.

The day the Detroit Red Wings start having “Ice Girls” -aka cheerleaders- as part of their hockey games at Joe Louis Arena is the day I go on strike against the, until now my beloved, sport of hockey. Bah hum bug.
