Recent NHL News – as of 03/18/09

There have been a number of NHL records broken within the past few days. Here are the records, along with some other NHL news that I received off of the NHL Network.

Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils, is the all-time winningest goaltender in the 92 year history of the NHL. His win record stands at 552. Sorry for the lateness of posting this historic event. It occurred on St. Patrick’s Day – March 17. Some fans in the crowd had a sign that said “St. Martin’s Day”. 🙂 And, of particular interest to me, is the fact that he has faced over 29,000 shots in his NHL career history. Wow…I am not certain that’s a record, but it’s a phenomenal amount of goals to face.

NHL Network has done an informative and entertaining two hour show about the history of Martin Brodeur’s hockey career. There are numerous interviews throughout it, but the one that stands out with me is near the end of the show. He has an arena named after him and he couldn’t bring himself to say the new name. 🙂 It is the arena that he first started playing hockey in as a kid. Now, it’s the “Martin Brodeur Hockey Arena”. His response was refreshing, in my opinion.
Kurt Maltby, Detroit Red Wings, played his 1,000 career game with the Red Wings. That occurred on March 17, 2009.

Patrick Elias, New Jersey Devils, is the all-time point scorer in their franchise history with a total of 702 points. That occurred on March 17, 2009.

April 13, 2009 is an All Day Marathon featuring Martin Brodeur on the NHL Network.

April 15, 2009 is the first day of the 2009 NHL Playoffs. Cool….What a great way to end tax season! 🙂

Quote: While talking about how difficult it is to be a hockey mother, Doc Emrick (award-winning hockey commentator), stated…”They need to have extra Maalox around”.
