What is the "Original Six"?

The term “Original Six” is used frequently when discussing the National Hockey League. What is meant by this term? And, who does it apply to?

The “Original Six” is a term used to describe the first six teams that joined the National Hockey League. They have a very rich and diversified history. These teams were in place when the NHL expanded during the 1960’s. (That’s when many other teams came into the NHL picture.)

So, what teams make up the “Original Six”? Well, the following teams have this unique distinction. The teams, along with their NHL origination year, are:

  1. Montreal Canadiens (1909)

  2. Toronto Maple Leafs (1917)

  3. Boston Bruins (1924)

  4. New York Rangers (1925)

  5. Chicago Blackhawks (1925)

and…last, but in no way least….

6. Detroit Red Wings (1926) – our 2007-08 Stanley Cup Champions!!!
