Finding Inspiration When Writing

Hi everyone. Along with writing come the times when nothing seems to come to mind. In other words, ‘writer’s block’. If it’s not writer’s block, it is just plain lack of desire, hard time with words, etc. How does one go about finding inspiration when writing to overcome this state? Everyone deals with this temporary setback differently. Read on…

There is a great blog post written by Leo Babauta on WriteToDone. It contains an informative article on just this subject. It lists a variety of ways to find inspiration, some may work for you and some may not. One, in particular, works well for me. That is finding inspiration from nature. Here is my story:

While recently taking a walk with my new knee, I noticed the simple act of a flock of robins strutting around and just chirping happily. They were simply enjoying the scenery and provided me with thoughts of pleasure. My home state is Michigan where the state bird is the robin. Then I recalled seeing an entire backyard filled with robins while down in Florida. You could say it was a “carpet of robins”. 🙂 Very nice.

Anyways, when I returned from my walk, I was inspired to write again. The writing came easy, with the words flowing without any problem at all. It was quite nice. I kicked out two chapters of my upcoming book in one hour. Wish it would go that well all the time. 🙂

So, everyone needs help finding inspiration when writing or tackling situations at some time or another. Find which way works best for you and go for it. Good luck!

  1. Hi,

It’s important, although sometimes difficult to create discipline. Just like the person who works from home, must be disciplined.
Some people even dress up like if they were going to work outside.
Sometimes inspiration needs to be “fished”.
Of course that it’s easier to talk than act 🙂

    Kind regards,

  2. Thanks for providing that tip. I will certainly check out the blog you cited. Not just for writing, but for Zen also.
Have a good day, and hope your knee doesn’t twinge too much!

  3. Jose…
Thanks for the comment. Discipline is important. I find that forcing myself to write produces work that is just not my best. So, I take a break…go for a walk, perhaps. It stimulates my inspiration.
    Good luck!

Thanks for your comment, also. I love the Zen Habits site. There is a ton of great info on it!
How’d you know my knee is twinging? 🙂
    Good luck!
