Part of the process of recuperating from your total knee replacement, is to diligently do exercises that are beneficial for both stretching and strengthening your leg muscles. At first, they are very difficult and painful. However, with time, the pain diminishes and the flexibility plus strength increases. Even though I still have a ways to go with my flexibility and strength, I have an exercise I wanted to share that can be done at all levels of recuperation.
The exercise involves simply standing on the leg affected by your total knee replacement. It involves balance, basically. As you increase your muscle strength,you increase your balance. At first, it works well to hold on to a chair. As your strength increases, you will not need the chair.Â This exercise can be considered a “chair exercise” at this stage.
Eventually, just stand still and raise your good leg (one that didn’t have the tkr) off the ground. You don’t necessarily have to do any yoga pose (this will be impossible when you first begin, anyways). In a sense, this is very elementary yoga since you’ll be concentrating on maintaining your balance.Â That’s my opinion, anyways.
If done correctly, you’ll be able to feel your muscles working. Just balance yourself on your one leg. I started doing this for only a few seconds (like about 10) at a time. And, I did repetitions of 3 to start with. Increase the time as you feel comfortable with it. Remember to start slowly and increase at your own pace.
